OBIT INFO:

Dr. Edward D. “Bud” Hall, 85, of Manomet died Saturday, December 16th at the Jordan Hospital. He was the husband of Natalie A. (Noyes) Hall. Born and raised in Worcester, he attended the Chestnut Street Congregational Church. He was the son of the late Roland F. Hall and the late C. Estelle Hall of Worcester.

Dr. Hall served in the US Army of Occupation in Germany after WWII, serving also with the National Guard in Wilmington, DE and Charlotte, NC. He retired in 1981 with the rank of Major.

After his return from Germany in 1947 he continued his education at Mass State College (which became UMass-Amherst), graduating with a PhD in Chemistry. In 1954, he went to work for the DuPont Chemical Company as a research chemist, retiring from there in 1982.

An accomplished swimmer (his father taught him to swim at 3 years of age), Dr. Hall was know internationally . He first swam for the Worcester YMCA while at Classical High School where he won several N.E. Titles; next at Mass. State, where he barely missed beating Johnny Weismuller’s free-style record by one-tenth of a second; (one journalist wrote at the time that he was the “Seabiscuit of the Swimming Pools” due to his way of pulling way out ahead of the pack, and dropping back to battle it out with his nearest rival; just eking out a narrow victory at the wire. Had he not been swimming his playful way, he would have broken Weissmuller’s world record.) He also swam with the 16th Infantry Regiment in Europe, helping them win many titles. And he was a “Master” swimmer with the Wilmington, DE and the Charlotte, NC teams winning international races in Australia in 1988.

Dr. Hall was a scuba diver and instructor, water safety instructor, active with the Boy Scouts, member of Kappa Sigma Phi; the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Sigma Psi, a teacher of chemistry to nurses at Holyoke College, Holyoke,MA and at Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston, NC. He loved traveling with his wife and family and meeting people all over the world. He always had great stories to tell.

In addition to his wife of 62 years, he is survived by daughter, Deborah Markham and her husband David of Manomet; son, Robert D. Hall and his wife Margaret of Lansing, Kansas, 3 grandchildren, Bethany Markham of Manomet, Julie (Hall) Curtis and family of FL; Daniel R. Hall and family of Kansas and five great grandchildren. He was the brother of Elizabeth Woodbury of Worcester and the late Martha B. Hill.

Visiting hours are Wednesday, December 20th from 5-7 pm at the Richard Davis Funeral Home, 619 State Road, Plymouth (Manomet). In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to the UMASS Swim Team, Box 31010 Boyden Building, University of MA, Amherst, MA 01003.
