Obituary

Charles S. Fowler, 82, of Londonderry, NH died December 16, 2006 at Parkland Medical Center in Derry, NH. He was born in Somerville, MA on July 21, 1924, a son of the late Hubert and Ella (Tewksbury) Fowler. Raised in Derry, he had resided in Londonderry since 1955. He was a decorated Army veteran of World War II, receiving a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his service. Mr. Fowler served in the Active Army Reserve for 33 years with Company B, 320th Military Police Battalion and retired with the rank of Sgt. Major. He was awarded the “Unit Soldier of the Year for 1965” by the Military Police Battalion. Prior to retiring in 1986, Mr. Fowler was employed as a rural letter carrier in the Derry/Londonderry area for 25 years. He received the 1972 National Outstanding Rural Letter Carrier Award. As an involved citizen, he has served as a member of the Londonderry Budget, Zoning and Recreation Committees. As the chairman of the Londonderry Bandstand Committee, he was instrumental in building the Bandstand on Londonderry Commons and also served as a committee member for the creation of the World War II Monument located on the Londonderry Commons. He was a proponent of the creation of the Londonderry Youth Athletic Association and was involved in the Derry Little League. Mr. Fowler was named the 1974 Londonderry Citizen of the Year. He was a 60-year member of American Legion Post 27 of Londonderry and also held membership in the VFW, DAV and the NRA. It was well known that he was proud of his family, his flag and his country.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Helen (Martel) Fowler of Londonderry; two sons, Brian Fowler and his wife, Kathleen of Derry and Craig Fowler of Derry; three grandchildren, Carissa LeBel, Jessica Kelley and Sadie Fowler. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Barbara Jacobson.
Calling hours were held on Wednesday, December 20th from 6 to 8 PM in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. A funeral service was held in the funeral home on Thursday at 10 AM. Following cremation, burial was Friday at 2 PM in Forest Hill Cemetery, E. Derry. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Warm Homes Programs, P.O. Box 329, Londonderry, NH 03053.
