Obituary

Robert Reid Hamilton, 85, a long-time resident of Winchester, passed away after a long illness on December 15th in the Lexington Health Care Center. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth (Nichols) Hamilton for over 60 years.

Born in Renfrew,Scotland he was the son of Hugh James and Margaret Hamilton. He immigrated to the US with his mother and older brother when he was five to join his father in Kearney, New Jersey. He attended Kearney public schools and after high school began working for the Prudential Insurance Company of Newark New Jersey. He enlisted in the US Army in 1942 and served for the duration of the war in a number of special training schools ending with enrollment in the medical school at the University of Michigan. Upon his discharge he went back to work at the Prudential Insurance Company and was with the company for forty–two years retiring as a manager in the Boston office in 1982.

He attended Rutgers University night school earning his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Business Administration.

In his spare time, Robert had many interests. He was a member of the Boston Yacht Club of Marblehead and enjoyed sailing his boat,the Bonne Vie. He taught literacy with the Lexington Literacy Program, was a member of the Masons and the Charles River Sail and Power Squadron where he served a term as commodore and taught boating classes in their educational programs.

Robert was a member of the First Congregational Church of Winchester. He also served a term on the Winchester Finance committee and was a volunteer who delivered books for the library.

In addition to his wife, he leaves behind his sons, Robert “Bruce” Hamilton of West Newbury and his wife Renee and Paul Reid Hamilton and his wife Moira of Manahawkin New Jersey. He was the dear brother of James Hugh, George Alexander and Greta Reid Hamilton. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Michael R. Hamilton and Kristen C. Hamilton
