Obituary

Alfred A. Szala, 89, of Port Charlotte, FL, formerly of Dartmouth died Tuesday December 12, 2006 at the Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans Home. He was the husband of Cecelia T. (Guzaj) Szala; they had been married for 62 years.

Born in Dartmouth, the son of the late Joseph F. and Josephine (Sniezek) Szala, he lived in Dartmouth all of his life before moving to Florida.

He was a communicant of St. Julie Billiart Church.

Mr. Szala was formerly employed as a tool and die maker for Morse Twist Drill, Atlas Tack Company, and the John I. Paulding Company.

Mr. Szala served as the chairman of the Dartmouth Board of Registrars of Voters for many years. He was a member of the American Legion and the Polish-American Veterans Association. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a graduate of Dartmouth High School and New Bedford Textile Institute.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Susan Olson and her husband Donald of North Port, FL, Rita Owen and her husband David of Raleigh, NC, and Joann Medeiros and her husband Michael of Dartmouth; a brother, Joseph Szala of Dartmouth; two sisters, Edmunda Szafran of Longmeadow and Albina Forys of Port Charlotte; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Stephen Szala, Eugene Szala, and Louise Cieplik.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 9:30 AM in St. Julie Billiart Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Friday from 4-8 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
