Obituary

Matthew L. Gormly,79,of Trimtown Road, Scituate, formerly of Oakwood Avenue in Providence, died Sunday at Roger Williams Medical Center. He was the beloved husband of Claire D. (DeMagistris) Gormly, RN. They were married September 6, 1952.
Born in Providence, a son of the late J. Lynn and Mary (Marshall) Gormly. He lived in Providence for 39 years previously living in the Edgewood section of Cranston.
Mr. Gormly was educated in St. Paul’s Catholic School. He graduated from LaSalle Academy and from Providence College in 1948. He was an insurance underwriter for Providence Washington Insurance Co. in Providence and the Allendale Insurance Co. in Johnston from 1960 to 1978. Matt was a seasoned veteran of the newspaper business and began delivering newspapers for the Journal together with his Dad when he was he was eight years old. During World War II, Matt’s whole family got involved as well as his boyhood friends as help was hard to find and newspaper delivery to your home was much more of a luxury. For 60 years he delivered the Sunday paper in Scituate and Johnston and went a stretch of 15 years without a Sunday off. He was committed to providing quality service to his customers and had over 300 customers requiring him to start his day about 3:00 am. After his retirement from Allendale insurance he became a part time counselor at West Side News and retired from the Providence Journal in l994. He was a member of AARP, the American Diabetes Association and the Smithfield Sr. Center. He was a volunteer money counter at St. Thomas Church. He enjoyed collecting old and new coins, radio talk shows and TV. He loved the History channel. He was also a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Scituate.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Michael Leonard Gormly and his wife, Deborah of East Providence, Paul Matthew Gormly and his wife Marianne of Warwick; a daughter, Patricia C. Jackson and her husband, Kevin of Scituate; four grandchildren, Christine, Kelly, Tyler and Ashley, a brother, John L. Gormly, of Warwick; three sisters, Cecelia M. Gay, Isabel L. Mulvaney and Agnes G. Gormly all of Warwick; uncle of many nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held on Thursday at 9:00am from the ANDERSON-WINFIELD Funeral Home, Route 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville.Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Thomas Church, 65 Fruit Hill Avenue, Providence followed by graveside committal at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence. Visitation Wednesday 4-8 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Thomas Church, 65 Fruit Hill Avenue, Providence, RI 02909.
