Leopoldina (Oliveira) Gomes, 97, of New Bedford died Saturday December 9, 2006 at Sacred Heart Home.
Born and raised in Brava, Cape Verde, the daughter of the late Francisco and Berta (Martins) Oliveira, she lived in Lisbon, Portugal for 25 years before moving to the United States in 1976, settling in Dorchester. She had lived in New Bedford for the past 29 years.
She was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Jovino Peres of Brockton; a brother Francisco DeOliveira, Jr., of Brazil; a sister, Benvinda Fernandes of New Bedford; three grandchildren, Paula Peres of New Bedford, Rui Peres of East Providence, RI, and Robert Peres of Taunton; three great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Jovita Leitao and Maria Sousa.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 9 AM in St. John the Baptist Church. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Monday from 5-9 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
