Obituary

Gordon C. Lawson, 90, a long-time resident of Winchester, formerly of Lexington, died on November 30 at Winchester Hospital following a brief illness. He was the son of the late William W. and Mabel L. (Mason) Lawson. Born and raised in Providence, RI, he attended Classical High School in Providence. He graduated from the Rhode Isand School of Design (RISD) in 1941 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Art education. After graduation, he enrolled in the U.S. Army and served during WWII. Upon discharge, he attended Cranbrook Academy in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where he met and married Constance (Hudler) and received his MFA in metal-smithing. After graduation, he taught Design at the University of Maryland and subsequently became a technical illustrator and a technical writer for various organizations including Chrysler and Schlumberger, from which he retired.

Since moving to the Boston area in 1963, in addition to his interest in his professional work, he taught metal-smithing at the Brookline Adult School and at the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA. He also occasionally presented metal-smithing demonstrations at the Paul Revere House in Boston.

Gordon is survived by his loving companion of many years, Victoria Glaser of Cambridge and Winchester, who he met at an evening mixer at the First Unitarian Church in Lexington in 1963. He was also the dear father of Susan A. Lawson and her husband John F. Mader of Tokyo, Japan. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, December 29th at 5PM in the Winchester Unitarian Church, 478 Main St. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend.
