Mae E. “Granny” Smith, 92, of Fitzgerald, died Sunday morning, December 3, 2006, at the Life Care Center.
Graveside services will be held 11 A.M., Tuesday, December 5, at Evergreen Cemetery, with Rev. Robert Couey officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 PM Monday evening at the Paulk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Smith was born July 8, 1914, in Ben Hill County, to the late Donald I. and Bertha M. Freeman. She was a life long resident of Ben Hill County, and for many years was cashier at Leggett's Market on Sherman Street in Fitzgerald.
Mrs. Smith is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Fred T. Spires of Fitzgerald: five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one brother, Frank (Jeanette) Freeman of Fitzgerald; and 4 sisters: Donnette (Henry) Ivemeyer of Fitzgerald, Jessie (Albert) Welch of Babson Park, FL, Alice (Ralph) Ross of Lawtey, FL and Ruby Welch of Tallahassee, FL. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis L. Smith, and two daughters, Bertha Joyce Gosa and Barbara Hartness.
The family suggests those desiring to send memorials in lieu of flowers may send them to any charity to benefit children.
