...1st male nurse to graduate Lowell State College in 1974; age 54
TEWKSBURY - Gary Richard Martell, R.N., C.R.N.I, age 54, one of the few Infusion Therapist
nurses in the Boston area, died Thursday evening, Nov. 30, at Saints Memorial Hospital in
Lowell, after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Candide “Candy” (Quinn) Martell, L.P.N.,
with whom he had celebrated a 20th wedding anniversary this past June 27th.
He was born in Medford, on December 11, 1951, a son of the late Richard James and Rozanne
(Knibbs) Martell. He came to Tewksbury at the age of three, and had remained a resident since.
He graduated from Tewksbury Memorial High School, and matriculated to Lowell State College,
where he became the first male to graduate from the School of Nursing in 1974. He later earned
his certification to become one of the few Certified Registered Infusion Therapy R.N.’s in the
Boston area. Prior to his illness, he worked for the South Shore V.N.A.
Mr. Martell, was a former member and officer of the Tewksbury Jaycees Club.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three children, Dianna Martell and Mark Martell both of
Tewksbury, and Carrie Savage of Lowell; a sister and brother-in-law, Linda Soles and her
husband Donald of Fla., a brother and sister-in-law, Paul Martell and his wife Christine of Fla., a
granddaughter, Joelle Savage of Fla; his mother and father-in-law, Thelma and Leroy Bourne of
Tewksbury; two brothers-in-law Roy Bourne of Tewksbury and Guy Quinn of Lowell; nieces and nephews; and many dear friends at the South Shore V.N.A.
He was also husband of the late Thelma M. (Bourne) Martell, who died in 1983.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 5, at the Tewksbury Cemetery. Memorials to the Memorial & Honor Program, St. Jude Children’s
Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105-1942 will be appreciated.
