Flora Elizabeth Steed Paulk McAloon, 94, of Decatur died November 20 at the VistaCare Hospice in Wesley Woods of Emory University.
Graveside services will be held 2 PM, December 4 in the Brushy Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Irwin County, with Rev. J. Hoffman Harris, Senior Minister Emeritus, of Briarlake Baptist Church in Decatur officiating.
She was born January 15, 1912 in Ocilla to the late Herbert W. and Ella Mae Chafin Steed. For many years she worked as legal secretary to the State of Georgia’s Assistant Attorney General and then as Administrative Secretary to the Dean of Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. A founder of Briarlake Baptist Church in 1958, she served as superintendent of the Junior Sunday School Department, and taught a class for young married ladies. She was also a founder of the Oak Grove AARP Chapter, serving as Vice-President for three terms, writing and presenting the chapter’s ten-year history, with others launching DeKalb County’s Life Enrichment Services and serving as a Director.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law: M. Donovan & Keturah W. Paulk of Highlands, NC and Ira H. & Janet T. Paulk of Decatur; son-in-law: William D. Wells of Tucker; grandchildren: Melanie S., David C., Daniel S., Kevin D., Philip W., Michael S., and Julie M “Jules” Paulk, Elizabeth Rebecca “Becky” Wells Mericle, Anne Neal Cranz, “J” Neal, III and their families and 13 great-grandchildren siblings: Paschal H. (Bettie) Steed of Oxford, AL, Fairrah Steed Bracy of Pooler. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Marvin W. Paulk, James A. Moore and Ernest A. McAllon, daughter, Elizabeth Rebecca Paulk Wells, grandchildren, Richard D. Wells and Dena P. Wells, sisters, Hazel and Jane Steed, brothers, James and Basil Steed.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Brushy Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, Ocilla, Georgia or to the American Cancer Society.
