Earl D. “Bud “ McMann, of Stoughton, a former Board of Selectman Member, World War II Veteran, Engineer and Community Leader, passed away on Sunday November 26, 2006 at The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He was 86 years old. He was the beloved husband of Aina M. (Carlson) .
Mr.McMann was born in Boston, Massachusetts on February 3, 1920. He was the cherished son of the late Earl L. and Grace D. (Dickson) McMann, he was the loving father of Jean Inman of Avon (Former Chairman of The Massachusetts Republican State Committee) and Earl McMann and his wife Johanna of Naples, Florida. Known as “PAPA” and “UNCLE BUD”, he is also survived by his adored grandsons Ross and Shawn McMann and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
During World War II, Bud proudly served four years in The United States Army1058th Corp of Engineers, in the Asiatic/ Pacific Theater and European/ African/ Middle Eastern Theaters.
He received a B.A. from Northeastern University in Engineering and Management and was employed by Unistrut Steel Corporation prior to his retirement in 1991.
Having lived in Stoughton for over fifty years, he distinguished himself serving in elected and appointed offices throughout the town. He was a twelve year member of the Board of Selectman, a thirty –five year Town Meeting Representative, a volunteer Firefighter, Deputy Town Moderator and had also served as the towns Sealer of Weights and Measures.
Bud was Chairman of the Bi-Centennial and Stoughton 250th Committee. It was through his efforts that they were able to begin the restoration of the Stoughton Railroad Station. He was past president of the Evergreen Cemetery Association, a long term member of the Goddard Health Foundation and Past President and Chairman of the Goddard Restorative Care Unit, Inc.
He was an active member of The First Congregational Church of Stoughton where he was able to serve as a member on the Diaconate Board. He was also Past Most Worshipful Master of The Rising Star Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Stoughton and was also an active member of the Aleppo Shriners.
Other community responsibilities included: leader of Boy Scout Troop # 57, past President of the Stoughton Rotary Club and Paul Harris Fellow award recipient, member of the Stoughton Historical Society, member of the Stoughton Grenadiers, member of the Berwick Boys Association, member of the local AMVETS and Michael Romanuk VFW Post 1645.
The Stoughton Women’s Club honored Bud and his wife Aina for their service to the town by planting a tree on the lawn of the Lucius Clapp Memorial.
Visiting hours to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend will be held on Wednesday November 29, 2006 from 4-8 P.M. in the Sheehan Funeral Home. A Masonic service will be held in Brother Bud’s memory at approximately 8:00 P.M. Mr. McMann will be interred in the family lot at Evergreen Cemetery on Thursday November 30, 2006 at approximately 11:30 A.M. ( ALL ARE INVITED TO ATTEND).
