Edward W. Bankoff, a resident of Lynnfield for over 47 years, died on November 26, 2006 at the Jewish Rehabilitation Center in Swampscott. He was 94 years old.
Born in Chelsea on June 17, 1912, the son of the late Benjamin & Sarah (Zakon) Bankoff, he was raised and educated in Chelsea. After graduating from Chelsea High School he went on to earn his BS degree in accountancy from the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance in 1935. Mr. Bankoff continued his education at Northeastern University where he earned his BA degree in business in 1941. He was inducted into the United States Army on September 28, 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts and served with the 610th Army Air Force Base Unit throughout the war, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theatre Ribbon, and the Victory Medal. Mr. Bankoff was honorably discharged on January 23, 1946 at the AAF Separation Center at Maxwell Field in Alabama.
Upon returning from military service, Mr. Bankoff continued his career in accounting with the Matz Leather Company and then the Internal Revenue Service. He continued to work until he was 82 years old.
Husband of the late Winifred (Taylor) Bankoff who died in 1994, Mr. Bankoff is survived by his children, Jane L. Popkin and her husband Marvin of Lynnfield; Dr. Mark S. Bankoff and his wife Ann of Lynnfield; Melissa Bankoff Goodhart and her husband James of Newburyport. He was also the grandfather of Sarah, Nathan, and Madeleine.
Funeral services will be held in the Torf Funeral Chapel, 151 Washington Ave. (Cary Sq.) CHELSEA on Tuesday, November 28, 2006 at 1:00 PM. Burial will follow in the Temple Emmanuel Cemetery, Buxton Rd. Danvers. Memorial observance will be held at the home of Jane & Marvin Popkin after the funeral on Tuesday and on Wednesday from 6-9 PM. Those wishing to remember Mr. Bankoff may do so through memorial donations to the Jewish Rehabilitation Center, 330 Paradise Rd. Swampscott, MA 01907 or to the Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm St. Danvers, MA 01923.
