Obituary

Roddy, Gerard L. of West Roxbury on November 24, 2006. Beloved husband of Judy Jose-Roddy. Devoted and loving father of Leah, Gerard and Elise, all of West Roxbury. Born the eighth of ten children, he also leaves Nancy and Kevin McGillicuddy, Thomas Roddy, Patricia and Ernest Etling, William Roddy and Judy Lowry, John and Patricia Roddy, James and Gayle Roddy, Charles and Chris Roddy, Christine Roddy, Noreen and Bengt Myrin; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He is pre-deceased by his brother, Paul Roddy. Mr. Roddy graduated from UMass Amherst in 1978 where he was a member of the Zeta Nu fraternity; many of those brothers remained life-long friends. He worked as a computer technician for National Medical Care, and then as a Computer Programmer and Analyst for the Gillette Company. When failing health forced an early retirement, he turned to writing and penned The Education of Gerry Roddy, a memoir detailing his own life and bits of the preceding generations. Mr. Roddy had great gifts of humor and music, as well, and is the author of several songs including “Fried Baloney Blues” and “Wearin’ the Fedora.” He was a paddling enthusiast, competing many years in the Run of the Charles. With his partner, Michael Schofield, the Roslindale Yacht Club Team once won and placed several times in their division. Mr. Roddy was active in the Holy Name Parish as a lector and with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Funeral from the Robert J. Lawler & Crosby Funeral Home, 1803 Centre St. WEST ROXBURY on Wednesday November 29, at 9:00 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in The Holy Name Church at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours Tuesday November 28, from 2-4 & 6-9 PM. Interment Mt. Benedict Cemetery. Donations may be made in Gerry’s memory to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney Street, Boston, MA 02115 or to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul c/o Holy Name Church, 1689 Centre St., West Roxbury, MA. 02132.
