RICHARD W. HUBBARD, 92
Richard W. Hubbard, math teacher and school administrator, died November 20, 2006 at his home in Worcester. He was 92 years of age.
Mr. Hubbard was born in Sunderland, MA, and graduated from Amherst, MA High School and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He attended Harvard University for 2 years, receiving a Masters Degree in Education, as well as an Academic Year Institute in Science sponsored by the National Science Foundation.
He taught junior and senior high school mathematics in the Newton School System. His administrative work in the Needham Schools consisted of 7 years as Director of Mathematics, K-12, and 6 years as Assistant Superintendent for Personnel Services. His part-time teaching experience was extensive in the Belmont and Newton Summer School Systems, Lincoln College at Northeastern University, the Education Department of Polaroid Corporation, and the Graduate School at the University of Illinois. He served as Master Teacher at the Harvard-Newton Summer Sessions conducted by the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
In 1950 he joined the First Baptist Church of Newton, served on various committees, and was one of the 3 co-founders of the Church’s Endowment Fund. Dick was a member of the Needham Retired Men's Club, the Boston Baptist Social Union and the Norumbega Fraternity Lodge.
After retirement he carried out his passion to travel to see as much of the world as possible by taking 92 trips including 27 bicycle tours and 45 Elderhostel programs.
He leaves his wife Blanche of Worcester, his brother Gardner of Baldwinsville, NY, his daughter, Jane Wyman and her husband David of Hampden, his grandson Richard Wyman and his wife Erin of Waterford, CT, his grandson Scott Wyman and his wife Lisa of Waimea, HI, and his 4 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church in Newton at the corner of Beacon and Centre Streets in Newton Center on Sunday, December 3, 2006 at 3:00 in the afternoon. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Instead of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund of the First Baptist Church in Newton, 848 Beacon St., Newton Centre, MA 02459.
