Obituary

Palma Deloris Taylor Brown, 80, formerly of Stonington and most recently of Nutmeg Healthcare Pavilion, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2006, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, with two of her children at her bedside.

Faced with some of life's harshest adversities, she overcame them through her courage, diligence, and deep faith in her God.

Active musically as a child in Bellview, Pa., she developed a keen interest in opera from listening to weekly radio broadcasts. She began to pursue professional vocal training until her desire to raise a family took priority. Still, she remained an avid vocalist.

She and her husband, George G. Brown, relocated to Stonington in 1961, from the Pittsburgh area. The family soon found their way to Mystic's Union Baptist Church where she shared her powerful contralto voice with its choir. A leader by nature, she played an active role in the growth of the church's Women's Fellowship. Highly articulate, she had great compassion for the disadvantaged and distressed.

Born in Pittsburgh on July 7, 1926, she was the stepdaughter and daughter of Robert and Bessie (Edmunds) Mattox. She graduated from Avalon High School in 1944 and later attended Mitchell College in New London.

Mrs. Brown is survived by her daughter, Marlyn Abbott and husband, James; her son, George Ronald Brown; and her daughter, Michelle Burton and husband, Barry; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and loving friends. She was predeceased by an infant son, Allen Brown.

Her family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Monday from 5-7pm. A Funeral Service will be conducted at Union Baptist Church, High Street, Mystic on Tuesday at 11am. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery.

In addition to flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Union Baptist Church Women's Fellowship Fund, 119 High St., Mystic CT 06355 or to St. Joseph's School, 25 Squire St., New London CT 06320.
