Obituary

Frank S. Simoncini, age 93, of 123 Pequot Ave., Mystic, passed away Sunday at his home with his family by his side.

A lifelong resident of the area, he was born in Groton on October 28, 1913 one of three children to Paul and Valentine Simoncini. He was a graduate of the former Broadway School and later graduated from National Automotive School in Los Angeles in 1935.

In 1929, Mr. Simoncini began his automotive career at the age of 16, working for the former Santin Chevrolet in Mystic. He later entered the US Army where he served as a Staff Sgt. of the motor pool for the Anti-Aircraft Unit of the 495th Battalion. At the conclusion of the war, he was honorably discharged after 5 years of service.

Upon returning from the service, he opened Mystic Socony Mobil Station on Main Street in 1947 which he operated for 17 years. He later moved the business around the corner to its current location on Broadway under the name, “Frank’s Gulf”. Upon his retirement, his sons took over the daily operations of the business.

An accomplished gardener, he was well known for his quality tomatoes and his manicured yard. He also enjoyed his dogs. For the past two years, he was lovingly cared for by his devoted daughter and niece, Betty Godomsky.

He was married to Sadie Theresa (Godomsky) Simoncini at St. Patrick Church on June 1, 1946. Mrs. Simoncini passed away September 25, 1986.

He is survived by his children, Stephen F. Simoncini, David S. Simoncini, and Susan Simoncini Kiernan, all of Mystic; a brother, Anthony Simoncini of Eastham, MA, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, “Pete” Simoncini.

His family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Tuesday from 6-8pm and Wednesday from 8:45-945am. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Brian Romanowski at St. Patrick Church, E. Main Street, Mystic on Wednesday at 10am. Burial will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery, Old Mystic.
