Elsie J. (Brown) Barry, 82 of Bedford, NH died November 12, 2006 in the Harborside Healthcare Center, Bedford after a period of failing health. She was born in Haverhill, NH on June 19, 1924 a daughter of the late Frank and Sadie (Johnson) Brown. She grew up in Cambridge, MA where she attended local schools. On July 24, 1943 she married John D. Barry, Sr.
She resided for many years in Derry and Londonderry, NH before moving to Grottoes, VA. She later returned to NH and resided in Weare, NH before moving to Bedford, NH in 1998. She was a member of the Weare Baptist Church. She retired in 1985 from the Derry School District after 18 years. She was a charter member of the WWII Memorial Society, Happy Wearites Senior Citizens Group and the Church Ladies Circle of Weare Congregational Church. She was past member of Trinity Baptist Church in Concord, NH and Mt. Horeb Presbyterian Church in Grottoes, Va.
She was a quiet woman of beauty and inner strength who cared about others and loved her family deeply. In her earlier years she enjoyed camping with her family, needle crafts and baking. She was an avid reader and scrabble player and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
She is survived by her three sons, John D. Barry, Jr. and his wife Beverly of Bedford, Norman B. Barry and his wife Lottie of Grottoes, VA, Brad R. Barry and his wife Dori of Weare, nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, also nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband in 1980, and also be her eldest son, Leigh D. Barry in 2000.
Calling hours were held Thursday November 16, 2006 from 12:00 – 1:30pm in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. A funeral service followed at 1:30pm in the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date in Forest Hill Cemetery, E. Derry. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, NH Affiliate, 249 Canal St., Manchester, NH 03101 or to the NE Heart Institute at Catholic Medical Center, 100 MacGregor St., Manchester, NH 03102.
