GILFORD- Douglas F. Weeks Jr. of 329 Old Lakeshore Road, died on Thursday, November 9, 2006 at Lakes Region General Hospital after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
Douglas was born on July 8, 1946, in Hartford, Connecticut, the son of Douglas F. Weeks Sr. and the late Harriett Hibbard (Page) Weeks.
Douglas was an adventurer and loving father. He graduated from Cheshire Academy in Cheshire, Connecticut in 1965 and attended the University of the Americas in Mexico City. He was the lead singer in Mexico’s most popular rock and roll band during the late 1960’s, the Gringos. He was fluent in Spanish and a self-taught classical guitarist.
Douglas traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Pacific Rim. He was an adventurer and long time surfer and aviation enthusiast. He started a hang gliding school in western Massachusetts, being one of the first people to hang glide off Mt. Greylock and participating in the World Hang Gliding Championships in Köesseu, Austria in 1975. He also started an ultralight flight park in Smithfield, Virginia. He later became a manufacturer’s rep for sporting goods throughout New England. He was the president of the American Windsurfing Industries Association in 1992-1993.
Douglas was predeceased by his mother Harriet Hibbard (Page) Weeks in 2000.
He is survived by his family; son Nathaniel Weeks and daughter Kendall Weeks of Gilford; father Douglas F. Weeks Sr. of Chatham, MA; brothers H. Richard Weeks of Orleans, MA, Gordon Weeks and wife Shauna of Mashpee, MA; Stuart Weeks and wife Kathy of Hanover, MA; nieces Seanna, Madison, and Cassidy, and nephew Gabriel, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
A celebration of his life was held at the Gilford Community Church, 19 Potter Hill Road, Gilford, New Hampshire on Saturday, November 18, 2006 at 1pm, Rev. Michael C. Graham, pastor of the church officiated. A gathering followed at the Gunstock Inn, 580 Cherry Valley Road, Gilford, New Hampshire.
