Paul B. Congo Sr., 89, of Derry, NH died at his home Monday, November 6, 2006. He was born in Lawrence, MA on February 22, 1917, a son of the late Luigi and Maria (Leo) Congo. Raised in Methuen, MA, he has resided in Derry since 1940. Mr. Congo was employed as a machinist by the General Electric Co. for 40 years until his retirement in 1979. The following year he began a second career as the golf pro at the Hickory Hill Golf Course in Methuen. He served in that capacity for the next twenty years, retiring in 2000. As a lifelong accomplished golfer he held the course record for many years at the Merrimack Valley Country Club in Methuen and was the Club Champion at Hickory Hill Golf Course for many years. He was crowned the Mass. State Amateur Champion twice and received a host of awards over the years.
He is survived by three daughters, Laurie Ashton of Georgia, Sharon Clarke of Derry and Marylee Martin of Derry; two sons, Paul B. Congo Jr. and Charlie J. Congo, both of Derry; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Caroline (Preston) Congo in 2003.
Calling hours were held on Sunday, November 12, 2006 from 2 to 4 PM in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. A funeral service was held on Monday at 10 AM in the funeral home. Burial followed in Forest Hill Cemetery, East Derry, NH.
