Joan B. (Ramos) Monteiro, 70, of New Bedford died November 6, 2006 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.
She was the wife of the late Arthur "Roque" Monteiro.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Joseph and Eva (Souza) Ramos, she lived briefly in Virginia and Connecticut while her daughter served in the U.S. Navy.
She was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Mrs. Monteiro was formerly employed as a stitcher, barmaid, and bar manager, and was the sole proprietor of JB MiniMart in New Bedford's South Central area.
She was a graduate of New Bedford Vocational High School, Class of 1954. She was a member of the Cape Verdean-American Veterans Ladies Auxiliary serving as treasurer for many years. She enjoyed making puzzles, doing crosswords, helping her fellow tenants at the Young House on Brock Avenue, watching old Shirley Temple movies, and assisting with various auxiliary functions.
Survivors include a daughter, Blanche Monteiro-Hooper, of Bremerton, WA; a granddaughter, Danika Swinson; two sisters, Dorothy Livramento of New Bedford and Alice Silva of Westminster, CA; two brothers, Alfred Ramos of Leicester, MA and Leonard Ramos of New Bedford; 27 nieces and nephews, 33 great-nieces and nephews, and 17 great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Josephine Andrews, Norman Ramos, Joseph Ramos, Jr., Blanche Ramos and Kenneth Ramos.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Friday, November 10th at 8 AM followed by her Funeral Mass in Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM. Interment St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours Thursday, November 9th from 4-8 PM.
