Anthony J. “Tony” Bruno of Mansfield and Barefoot Bay, Florida formerly of East Walpole died of complications from leukemia on Sunday November 5, 2006 surrounded by his loving family at home. He was the beloved husband of Joan E. (Taylor) Bruno.
Born in Mansfield, MA on March 22, 1929 he was a dear son of the late Salvatore and Orsola M. (Cutillo) Bruno.
He was educated in Mansfield schools and was a 1948 graduate of Monsignor Coyle High School in Taunton. He had also completed course work at Boston University and was a graduate of the Franklin Technical Institute in Boston. He had served in the United States Air Force from 1951-1953 during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged with the rank of Airman First Class.
Mr. Bruno was employed by the Foxboro Company from 1948 until his retirement in 1987. During those 39 years, he worked his way up the ladder eventually becoming Sales and Marketing Manager for the company’s Chart Division. His work took him all over the United States.
In addition to his full-time job, Mr. Bruno also worked seasonally as a General Supervisor for Stadium Management Corp. in Foxboro, from 1973-1988. For many years, he was also a familiar fixture selling popcorn at local football games in Walpole.
Mr. Bruno also had an extensive career of civil service in the town of Walpole. He was a member and Chairman of the Walpole School Committee during the turbulent 1970’s. He frequently spoke on town issues at town meetings where he was a Representative of Precinct 2 from 1972 to 1990.He was elected to the Board of Assessors numerous times. He served in the towns Permanent Building Committee, Sewer Study Committee, Bylaw Study Committee and Charter Commisssion.
He taught CCD at St. Mary’s Church in East Walpole from 1962-1970 and was a past president of the Holy Name Society. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Mansfield and was a member of the Mansfield Knights of Columbus.
Tony enjoyed cooking, discussing politics and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox. His greatest love in life was his family. He moved back to his hometown of Mansfield in 1992 after living in Walpole for 32 years. He was a former summer resident of Mattapoisett.
In addition to his beloved wife Joan he is survived by his devoted children; Robert J. Bruno and his wife Mary of Mansfield, Richard Bruno and his wife Lee Ann of East Walpole, Vickie A. Carr and her husband Paul of Dartmouth, Cynthia M. Fiedler and her husband Dana of Mansfield and Theresa Tomasello and her husband Jack of Foxboro. His sisters and brother; Christina Salachi of Mansfield, Madeline Galvani of Framingham, William Bruno of Mattapoisett and the late Francis Bruno, Clara McClellan
and Carmella Bruno. His cherished grandchildren; Matthew, Anthony, Joshua, Shannon, Jared, Erin, Nicholas, Raymond and Anthony. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend his funeral mass to be celebrated on Saturday November 11th at 10:30 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt St.(Route 106) Mansfield. Private burial will be at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Mansfield.
