George W. Goldie, Jr. 82 died Wednesday October 25th after a period of failing health. He was the former husband and long time devoted friend of Marion (Fongeallaz) Goldie.
Born in West Bridgewater a son of the late George W. and Hattie E. (Young) Goldie he was a graduate of Howard High School in West Bridgewater and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst Class of 1950, where he earned his bachelors degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
During his long career as a Registered Civil Engineer with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Highway Department, George had the honor of working on many key elements of today’s transportation system, including the Braga Bridge of Fall River, Route 128 in the Braintree area, Route 25 to the Bourne Bridge and the Middleboro to Plymouth section of Route 44. He was also responsible for undertaking eminent domain proceedings for his district. He was an active surveyor throughout his life and “Goldie Road” in West Bridgewater was named for him.
He was a Veteran of the United States Army, Company A 24th Signal Heavy Construction Battalion during WWII and saw action in France, Belgium and Germany including the Battle of the Bulge in 1944. He told the story of being so conscientious while on Security Detail that he refused stage access to the USO performer Mickey Rooney for lack of proper credentials.
George was an outdoor enthusiast and enjoyed taking his family on camping trips to National Parks around the country and throughout the west with his favorite destination being California. He was also an avid bicycle rider who enjoyed touring by many modes of transportation including bike, canoe and car. He enjoyed spending his retirement years out on the lake in his canoe or sail boat.
George was the beloved father of Patricia A. Sullivan of Norton, Carol Jean Goldie of Kingston and Louise M. Landers of Hanover; beloved brother of Jean Goldie and June Noyes both of West Bridgewater and Richard Goldie of California. Long time devoted friend to his former wife Marion (Fongeallaz) Goldie of West Bridgewater, also survived by 8 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and several nieces & nephews.
His funeral will be held Tuesday October 31st @ 10:00 AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Route 58 at the Rotary Circle) Whitman. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, West Bridgewater. Visiting hours Monday October 30th from 4-8 PM.
