Laura M. Povey, 97
Retired Latin Teacher

Laura M. Povey, 97, of Norton died on Tuesday October 17, 2006 in Rehoboth at the home of the Kay Mann family. The Mann family were dear friends of Laura and had also served as her caregivers.
Born in Attleboro, MA on June 30, 1909 she was a loving daughter of the late Thomas and Emma (Hofmann) Povey.
An Attleboro native Laura was educated in Attleboro schools and was a 1926 graduate of Attleboro High School. She was a 1930 honors graduate of Wheaton College. She was the first person in Wheaton College history to receive an earned Masters Degree.
Miss Povey began her teaching career at Norton High School where she taught for 2 years. She then taught at Attleboro High School for 8 years before moving to Conn. where she taught at Darien Jr. High School for many years before retiring in 1963.
During WWII Laura served in The United States Navy for 2 ½ years active duty with the WAVES. She was honorably discharged with the rank of Lieutenant (SG). After her active duty service she remained in the USNR for several years. She was extremely proud of her service to our country.
Laura was a member of the Wheaton College Alumna Foundation and the Phi Beta Kappa at the college. She was a lifelong member of the Second Congregational Church in Attleboro. She was a member of both the National and Connecticut Education Association. She was a member of the board of directors at the Daggett-Crandall- Newcomb Home in Norton. She had lived in Norton for many years and was formerly of Attleboro. When she was younger, Laura enjoyed the times spent at the family’s cottage that she helped to build in Sandwich.
She is survived by her dear cousins Ruth King of Mansfield and Corris Hofmann of Colorado.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend graveside funeral services with military honors on Saturday October 21st at 10:00 A.M. at the Norton Center Cemetery, Pine St., Norton. Burial will follow.
Visiting hours are omitted. In lieu of flowers donations in Laura’s memory may be made to either the Daggett-Crandall-Newcomb Home 55 Newland St. Norton, MA 02766 or to the Evelyn Thomas Fund C/O the Doolittle Home 16 Bird St. Foxboro, MA 02035.
