Richard Lopes, 68, of New Bedford died September 11, 2002 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.
He was formerly married to Julie (Tavares) Lopes of New Bedford, and was the son of the late Louis J. and Cora A. (Johnson) Lopes.
Mr. Lopes was born in New Bedford and had lived in New Jersey for 7 years before moving back to New Bedford in 1969.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Mr. Lopes was formerly employed as a security officer at UMass Dartmouth until his retirement after 25 years of service.
Survivors include his former wife; a son, Ronald Lopes of New Bedford; a daughter, Angela Lopes Duarte of New Bedford; a brother, Roy M. Lopes of New Jersey; a sister, Frances Cuvilje of New Bedford; 5 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; and forever his little friend, Jazz.
He was the father of the late Richard Lopes, Jr., and brother of the late Adrien W. Lopes, Louis Lopes, Jr., Albert Lopes and Floyd Lopes.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church Monday, September 16th at 11 AM.
Visiting hours in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, Sunday, September 15th from 6-8 PM.
Interment St. John's Cemetery.
