Dorothy (DeCosta) Blackett, 72, of Fairhaven, formerly of Tobey Lane, Mattapoisett died November 25, 2001 at Alden Court Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center due to complications from acute myelogenous leukemia.
She was the former wife of the late Milton J. Blackett and daughter of the late Arthur and Josephine (Frates) DeCosta.
Mrs. Blackett was born in Fairhaven, she attended Fairhaven schools and remained a Fairhaven resident until moving to Mattapoisett in 1962.
Dorothy’s career in the food service industry began at the Bridge Diner on Pope's Island in New Bedford and the Skipper Restaurant in Fairhaven. In 1959, she was employed by the Harbor Beach Club in Mattapoisett as a hostess and manager, working there for 20 years until the restaurant closed. She continued to work as a hostess at the Cathay Temple in Mattapoisett for four years until she had to retire in August 1984 because of her Multiple Sclerosis.
In April, 1990, Dorothy became a resident of Alden Court Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and quickly became involved in all the daily activities at the facility.
A devoted mother, grandmother and sister, Dorothy will be remembered as a kind, compassionate woman always ready to help others and with a smile for everyone she met.
Survivors include two daughters, Darlene J. Blackett of Mattapoisett and Judith A. Alves of New Bedford; a granddaughter, Jennifer L. Alves of Framingham; a sister, Evelyn D. Yuille of New Bedford; a nephew, James B. Yuille of Essex, CT.
She was the aunt of the late R. Stephen Yuille.
