William C. Black, 96, of East Bridgewater died Monday, Oct. 9, at Life Care Center of Raynham. He was the husband of the late Hazel (Lagerstedt) Black.
Born April 1, 1910, in Avon, he was the son of the late William L. and Annie M. (Peckham) Black.
Raised and educated in West Bridgewater, he graduated from Howard High School, where he was a 3-letter athlete.
Mr. Black was a salesman at Nabisco for many years, retiring in 1972.
He had been a resident of E. Bridgewater since 1938, coming from W. Bridgewater.
Mr. Black was a member of St. Ann’s Church in W. Bridgewater and Knights of Columbus in E. Bridgewater.
He was a past chairman for the E. Bridgewater Senior Citizens and a representative for Old Colony Elder Services. He was also a member of the E.B. Garden Club, Melodians singing club in E. Bridgewater, and organized the senior bowling league.
Mr. Black enjoyed baseball, and playing cards and cribbage.
He was the father of James of E. Bridgewater, Maryanne Smith and her husband J. Thomas of N. Falmouth and Rosemary Valentine and her husband Timothy of E. Bridgewater; sister of the late Doris Lord and Fred Peckham. Also survived by 10 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Ann’s Church, W. Bridgewater, Thursday at 11 am. Visiting hours prior to Mass in the Wales-Prophett Funeral Home, 35 Spring St., E. Bridgewater, Thursday from 9:30 to 10:45 am. Burial is private.
