WEBSTER – Stephen J. Markiewicz, 82, of 12 Emerald Avenue, died Saturday, Oct. 7, in Saint Vincent Hospital, Worcester.
He leaves his wife of 55 years, Alice T. (Ostrowski) Markiewicz; a son, Richard S. Markiewicz and his wife Janet of Webster; 4 brothers, Walter and Frank Markiewicz of Webster, Chester Markiewicz of Litchfield, NH, and Joseph Markiewicz of Cleveland, OH; 3 sisters, Theresa Pukalo of Canterbury, CT, Mary Brisson of Largo, FL, and Sister Mary Adelia, with the Felician Sisters in Enfield, CT; 2 grandchildren, Crystal L. and Richard S. Markiewicz; nephews and nieces.
He was born in Webster, one of the 12 children of Joseph and Delia (Kulczak) Markiewicz, and was a lifelong resident. He attended Bartlett High School.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe. He was a prisoner of war in Germany for 7 months.
Mr. Markiewicz was a boss fixer at local textile mills, in Carlton Woolen in Rochdale. He retired from Anglo Fabrics co. in 1987.
He was a member of St. Joseph Basilica and a former member of the Polish American Veterans.
He enjoyed golf and sports, and was an avid Bartlett High School fan. Above all, he loved his family.
The funeral, with military honors, will be held Wednesday, Oct. 11, from Scanlon Funeral Service, 38 East Main St., with a Mass at 10:00 AM in Saint Joseph Basilica, 53 Whitcomb St. Burial will be in St. Joseph Garden of Peace. Calling hours are from 6:00 to 9:00 PM Tuesday, Oct. 10, in the funeral home.
