John J. Hayes, Jr., 79, of Dean Avenue, Johnston, died Sunday, October 1, 2006 at Elmhurst Extended Care Facility. He was the husband of the late Joan H. (Taylor) Hayes.
Born in Johnston, he was a son of the late John J. and Helen (Rogers) Hayes. He was a lifelong resident of Johnston.
He was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church, North Providence. He was an Army Veteran. Mr. Hayes was a 1950 graduate of RI College. His post graduate activities include 41 years as a teacher, counselor and principal in Dolgeville, NY, Johnston and Cranston retiring from E.S. Rhodes. He was a visiting lecturer and supervisor of student teaching at Providence College and RIC. He was president and newsletter editor of the RI Elementary School Principal’s Association, and president of the Cranston Association of School Administrators.
John’s civic and community work include rescue lieutenant for the Johnston volunteer Fire Co., Volunteer ARC first aid instructor for 15 years and chair for the Johnston Branch ARC. He loves his family, friends, neighbors and cats.
He currently conducts semi-annual food drives for Amos House, visits schools with craft projects and helps neighbors with transportation and maintenance.
He is survived by four sons J. Michael Hayes and his wife Marilyn of Spring Hill, FL, Thomas P. Hayes of Smithfield, James A. Hayes and his wife Karen of Johnston, William J. Hayes and his wife Elizabeth of West Warwick, three daughters Maggie M. Busam and her husband James of Smithfield, Patricia J. Morgan and her husband Brad, of Cumberland, Maryellen H. Tobin and her husband Edward of Smithfield and 12 grandchildren.
His funeral will be held Thursday at 9am from the *ANDERSON-WINFIELD Funeral Home, Route 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Lawrence Church, 624 Woonasquatucket Avenue, North Providence. Visitation Wednesday 3-7pm.
