Nelson A. Godfrey, 77, of Earhart Street, Johnston, a respiratory therapist at new England Sinai Hospital in Stoughton, MA, before retiring in 1992 died Friday at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of Nancy L. (Shaw) Godfrey.
Born in Westerly, he had been a resident of Johnston for 22 years and had previously lived in Stoughton.
He was an Army Veteran serving in Korea. He was a 50 year member of Roger Williams Lodge #32, Past Master of Daylight Lodge #48, St. John Lodge #1, Providence, Past Commander Calvary Commandery #13, St. John’s Commandery #1; Scottish Rite, Valley of Providence; RI Shrine-Temple Guard; Providence Chapter #1; Harmony Chapter #15; Scituate Chapter #8; Providence Council #1; Doric Council #8; Adoniram Council #8; RI Masonic Vets; Whatcheer York Rite College; Moslem Grotto; Knights Masons; KYCH; Renaissance Chapter #429 Allied Masonic Degrees; Past Grand Tyler for Grand Lodge of RI; Past Grand Marshall for Grand Council of RI; Signet OES; and Awarded the “Ish Sodi” and Cyptic Mason of the Year Awards.
Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters Lindsay King of Johnston, Melissa Bourgois, of Cranston, two sons Nelson A. Godfrey, Jr. of Smithfield, and Greg Godfrey, two step sons, Robert Atkinson of North Providence, and Joseph Pavone of Pawtucket, eight grandchildren, a sister Betty Godfrey of Cranston, and two brothers Fred Godfrey of Warren and Ralph Godfrey of Hope Valley.
His funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11:30am in the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Rt 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. Burial with military honors will follow in Highland Memorial Cemetery. Visitation Monday 3-7pm.
