Obituary

LOWELL—Rev. John Wholey, OMI, died Tuesday morning September 10th, at the Oblate Infirmary and Retirement Residence, in Tewksbury. He was 88 years old and served as Chaplain at Sts. Memorial Medical Center, until 1993.

He was born in Lowell, on November 23, 1913, a son of the late John J. and Mae (McNamee) Wholey. He was a graduate of Lowell High School and Canisius College, in Buffalo, NY. He was ordained in Washington, DC, on May 30, 1939, by Bishop McNamara.

Fr. Wholey served in Newburgh, NY, Youngstown, OH, Fayetteville, NC, Gary, IN, Port Huron, MI and in Lowell at the Sacred Heart Church and the Immaculate Conception Church.

He was a Chaplain assigned to Saints Memorial Medical Center, from 1982 until 1993. Previously he served as chaplain in Grand Rapids, MI.

Surviving him are brother: Donald Wholey, of York Beach, ME; a sister: Isabelle Doyle, of Arlington; a nephew: Rev. John Hogan, OMI, of the Immaculate Conception Church, Lowell; and other numerous nieces and nephews.

Fr. Wholey will lie in state at the Oblate Novitiate Chapel, 486 Chandler Street, Tewksbury, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM on Thursday, September 12th. A Vesper Service will be celebrated at 7:30 PM. His Con-celebrated Funeral Mass will be offered Friday morning, September 13th, at 10 AM at the Oblate Novitiate Chapel. Burial in the Oblate Grotto.
