Angelina Schiavone
Angelina Marie Franchino Schiavone ("Angie" to friends, "Lil" to her family) was born to Frank L. Franchino and Anna Garguilo Franchino on May 1, 1924, in Massafra, Italy, while her family was visiting relatives there. She got the nickname "Lily" because her mother loved the flower Lillies of the Valley. She was raised in Herkimer, New York, the middle child of nine. She passed away October 14, 2026.
The family moved to Glendale, California, in the mid-1940s. The moment the Navy began recruiting women, she joined and proudly served as a WAVE in the medical corps during World War II.
She had begun dating John Schiavone in Herkimer, then waited for him to join her in California. They were married on January 31, 1948, at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in Glendale. When John graduated college and became employed by the State of California, they relocated to Sacramento for two years, where their daughter, Carmen, was born. In 1952, John was transferred to Ventura, and there they stayed. One more daughter, Ann Frances, was born in Ventura.
Angie/Lil worked at the Broadway (now Macy's) for 20 years. She loved it so much that she used to say she would pay them just to work there.
John and Angie enjoyed an active and fulfilling social life and embraced the many wonderful friends they made, many of them as a result of attending Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church. They were part of the Founders Group for the Church. John was an active member in the Knights of Columbus, and Angie belonged to and was very active in the Young Ladies Institute (YLI) for 70 years.
John and Angie participated in several bowling leagues and spent a lot of enjoyable time at the Ventura Elks Lodge.
Angie/Lil was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John, in 2017, and all of her siblings. She is survived by her daughters Carmen Schiavone (husband Rob Melrose) and Ann Frances Elliott (husband Chuck) and many nieces and nephews she dearly loved.
We would like to thank her devoted caregivers Shiela, Felice, Dolores, Lucy, and Armina, as well as our good friend Ofelia, who made time each week to visit Mom. A special thank you to Assisted Hospice Care, Dana Harvey RN, caregivers Vicky and Delilah, and Chaplain Paul. They all spent valuable time ensuring mom's comfort and supporting her family. Our thanks to the caregivers and staff at Cypress Place Senior Living.
