Obituary

Scott David Campbell (1947-2026)

Scott David Campbell passed away peacefully at his home in Natick, Massachusetts, on October 12, 2026 at the age of 78.

Born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, on November 15, 1947, Scott was the son of Myles and Lillian Campbell and the oldest to two sisters, the late Sheila Campbell, and Kimberly Campbell Russell. He grew up in Gloucester before moving to Jacksonville, Florida, during his senior year of high school. Following graduation, Scott proudly served four years in the United States Air Force, stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, South Dakota. It was there that he met his late wife, Rita R. Schlenker.

After their time in South Dakota, Scott and Rita returned to Gloucester before settling in Farmington, Maine, where Scott resumed his career with New England Telephone Company as a Lineman. Together, they built a life and raised their two children, Laura Campbell Smith and Kirk Campbell. Scott took pride in his work and embraced the community around him, becoming involved with the Farmington Lions Club, Elks Lodge and the West Farmington Fire Department. He was an avid golfer, skier and longtime little league coach.

In retirement, Scott returned to Jacksonville Beach, Florida, before eventually making his way back to Massachusetts to be closer to Kirk, Laura, son-in-law Todd Smith, and his two grandsons, Connor and Ethan Smith. Family was at the heart of Scott’s world. To Connor and Ethan, he was simply Pops—a loving, devoted, and enthusiastic grandfather who rarely missed an opportunity to cheer them on from the sidelines, shoot a game of pool or enjoy a putting competition with them. Scott treasured every moment spent with his grandsons.

A passionate sports fan and trivia enthusiast, Scott cherished the memories made over the years with family and friends rooting for his favorite teams - Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots, Jaguars, and Florida Gators.

Scott had a remarkable gift for making people feel welcome. He loved meeting new people and would almost always begin a conversation by asking where someone was from, quickly finding a connection or a shared experience. He had a natural warmth that made strangers feel like friends and friends feel like family. Always smiling, generous with his time, and genuinely interested in the lives of others, Scott formed lasting friendships wherever life took him. He was a cherished friend to many and a familiar, welcoming presence in every community he called home.

A man of many talents and passions, Scott was also a gifted artist who found great joy in painting watercolors. His artistic spirit, love of music, and enjoyment of dancing reflected his appreciation for the beauty and simple pleasures of life. He was also a brilliant storyteller, recounting childhood shenanigans, lessons learned on the golf course, adventures with friends, and treasured moments with family. His stories were filled with personality, humor, and the richness of a life well lived. Those who had the pleasure of listening to him will forever remember the way he could bring a memory to life and make everyone feel as though they were right there beside him.

For the past seven years, Scott called Avenu Natick home, where he became a treasured part of the community, often referred to as “the Mayor". He brought his familiar smile, welcoming spirit, and gift for conversation to those around him, creating connections that made his presence special. He was grateful for the friends he had made there, and will be deeply missed by the many friends and neighbors whose lives he touched.

Scott’s life was defined not only by the places he lived or the work he did, but by the people he loved, the friendships he built, the stories he shared, and the countless ways he made others feel seen and valued. Though his absence leaves an immeasurable space in the hearts of those who loved him, his spirit will live on in every story retold, every watercolor admired, every song that invites someone to dance, and every moment his family and friends share together.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life on Friday, November 20th in Gloucester with family and friends to honor Scott. Details will be shared at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, we welcome family and friends to share memories of Scott by clicking the guestbook link at the top of this page.
