Robert Emile Farland Sr., 91, of Derry, NH, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at his home. He was born on April 18, 1935.
A self-taught and creative man, he was hardworking, practical, and a true artist at heart. He enjoyed keeping busy with his many hobbies and projects, including woodworking, carving, drawing, and photography. He was a lifelong reader, always curious and eager to learn, and approached life with a no-nonsense attitude, a strong work ethic, and a generous heart.
He especially loved traveling with his wife, Shirley. Together, they often set off on long road trips with no particular destination in mind, sometimes simply hopping in the car and driving for hours, just because. Wherever they went, they made memories together, photographing everything along the way. Whether immersed in a creative project, exploring somewhere new, or enjoying the simple pleasures of everyday life, he lived life in his own way, making the most of each day.
Above all, he was an amazing father who loved his children and instilled in them the strong values that guided his own life. Through his example, he taught the importance of hard work, independence, honesty, and perseverance. The lessons he shared and the values he lived by became a lasting part of the people his children grew up to be, a legacy that will continue for generations.
He is survived by his son, Robert E. Farland, Jr. and wife Terry of Rochester, NH; three daughters, Loretta Beattie and her husband Allen of Sandown, NH, Katherine Moore and her husband the late Don of Franklin, NH, and Victoria Cassidy and her husband James of Allenstown; daughter-in-law Kerry Farland of Derry, 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his first wife, Gail Farland, his second wife, Shirley Matteuzzi Farland, and two sons, Anthony and Joseph Farland and a stepson Richard Matteuzzi.
Following cremation, memorial calling hours will be held on Thursday October 22, 2026, from 4:00pm - 6:00pm with a funeral service to begin at 5:30pm in the Peabody Funeral Homes & Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory to New Hampshire Audubon, in honor of his lifelong love of nature, wildlife, and photography, and his appreciation for the beauty of the New Hampshire outdoors. https://nhaudubon.org/donate/make-a-donation/
