Obituary

Anne Marie C. (McDonough) Cassidy, 85, of Lowell, died peacefully on Monday, October 5, 2026, at Sunny Acres Nursing Home in Chelmsford, with her family by her side, after a long battle with dementia. She was the beloved wife of the late Bernard F. Cassidy, with whom she shared nearly 60 years of marriage before his passing in 2020.

Anne Marie was born in Lowell on February 3, 1941, the daughter of the late George McDonough and the late Catherine (Carroll) McDonough. She grew up in the Highlands and remained a proud Highlands resident all her life. She was educated in Lowell and graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Tyngsboro. Anne Marie was also deeply proud of her family's roots in the McDonough Funeral Home, a heritage she held close to her heart.

Early in her career, Anne Marie worked as a secretary for the IRS. She later worked at Giovanni's Shoe Store in downtown Lowell, where she formed a lasting friendship with John and Virginia Bertos. Above all, she devoted herself to her home and family.

Anne Marie was a lifelong communicant of St. Margaret of Scotland Church. She grew up spending her summers at Hampton Beach, and her love of the beach lasted a lifetime, from childhood days in the sand to sharing a lobster roll with her husband, Bernard. She loved photographs and was the family's original scrapbooker, carefully preserving its memories long before scrapbooking became popular. She was also a devoted Bruins fan with a special fondness for Original Six hockey.

Anne Marie is survived by her daughter, Anne (Cassidy) Slattery and her husband, James, of Chelmsford, and by her sons, Thomas E. Cassidy and his wife, Julianne, of Tewksbury, and George M. Cassidy and his wife, Jennifer, of Rindge, NH. She also leaves her grandchildren: Julia, Jack, Thomas, and Kathryn Slattery of Chelmsford; MaryCate and Brenna Cassidy of Tewksbury; and Alyssa, Ellie, and Cora Cassidy of Rindge, NH. She is further survived by her two great-granddaughters; her sister, Joan Denisevich of North Chelmsford; her sisters-in-law, Gail and her husband, Ron Cenik of Lowell, and Mary and her husband, Paul Demers, of Dracut; and her dear friends Jane Coutu, Meghan Mahoney, and John and Virginia Bertos. She was the the mother of the late Marie Cassidy, and the sister of the late Pauline Gorham, and sister in law of the late Joann and George O'Brien, Francis Cassidy and Nicholas Denisevich.

Her family is deeply grateful to the entire staff at Sunny Acres for the care and friendship they gave her over the past six years. They also extend their heartfelt thanks to her two lifelong friends, Jane Coutu and Meghan Mahoney, for their steadfast support in recent years.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to gather directly at church on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, for her Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Margaret of Scotland Church, 374 Stevens Street, Lowell, MA 01851. Burial will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery, 1251 Gorham Street, Lowell.
