MEEHAN, Arthur H., Jr. Longtime resident of Dover, formerly of Montclair, NJ and Glen Ridge, NJ, and born in New York, NY, passed away on September 16, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. Husband of Jeanne M. (Gibbons) Meehan for 55 years. Devoted and proud father of Jennifer Mynahan and her husband Rich of Medfield, Daniel Meehan of St. Louis, MO, and Kevin Meehan and his wife Vina of Pelham, NY. Loving Pop of Abby, Conor, Lydia, Patrick, Josie, Henry, Timmy, Adrianna, and Tiffany. Brother of Daniel Meehan and his wife Claire of NJ, and the late Carol Woods, and Dennis Meehan and his surviving wife Bridget. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Arthur’s nine-decade journey began in Brooklyn, New York. He later moved to Montclair, New Jersey and was a standout athlete at St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark lettering in football, basketball and baseball. He attended St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania where he majored in economics and starred on the Bearcats’ basketball and baseball teams. St. Vincent remained a focus throughout his life dedicating many years on the Board of Trustees and establishing a scholarship that continues to help numerous students to this day. The Benedictine ideals instilled at St. Vincent forged a broader commitment to education leading to additional trusteeships at Seton Hill College and Babson College and being elected as the Vice Chairman of the Melrose school committee. A lifelong learner, he studied business management at Baruch College and Columbia University and government at Harvard University.
Arthur was also a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy. He received his commission upon completing Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI and was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant after four years active duty. He sailed the world on several destroyers, including the USS John Perry. He was particularly proud of his participation in President Eisenhower’s People to People Program in which he traveled extensively through the Philippines.
Arthur parlayed his overseas experience in the Navy into a highly successful career in international finance. Returning to his roots, he launched his career in New York working at Bank of America as the Assistant Head of the Foreign Exchange Department, J. Henry Schroder Banking Corp. as the Assistant Head of the International Treasury Department, and as a former member of New York Fed’s Foreign Exchange Committee. During this time, Arthur was recognized as an expert foreign exchange trader. In particular, he was dubbed the “Sterling Trader” for his acumen with trading the British currency.
However, his most successful trade was the one he and his wife Jeanne made with the decision to move to Boston. Accepting a job with the Bank of New England, Arthur worked his way up to the head of the International Banking and Treasury Divisions. He later led Medford Bank as President, C.E.O. and Chairman of the Board and served on various boards, including as a Director of Citizens Financial Group.
Arthur was a dedicated family man who loved spending time in Cape Cod with his wife, children and grandchildren. He loved capping off a day at the beach by holding court in the “breeze way” in Chatham or the “crow’s nest” in Falmouth enjoying sun-drenched views of Great Pond. An expert conversationalist, he relished regaling family and friends with stories from his youth and expounding his views on current events. His ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere at any time cultivated an enormous and diverse group of lifelong friends. He was a proud member of numerous clubs, including Brae Burn Country Club, Sacconnesset Golf Club and Latrobe Country Club, and was an active participant in his community. Faith was a cornerstone of his life and he was an active parishioner of his home parish, Most Precious Blood, for decades. He will be remembered for his generosity, kindness, infectious laughter, and commanding presence that will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Visiting hours will be held at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 1305 Highland Ave, Needham on Monday, September 21st from 4-7pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at Most Precious Blood Church, 30 Centre St., Dover at 10am (Please go directly to the church). Relatives and friends kindly invited. Burial in Highland Cemetery, Dover.
