Obituary

Gary Lawrence Evans, 67, of West Medford, Massachusetts, departed this life on August 15, 2026. Gary was born on October 16, 1958, to Warren and Sylvia Evans. He was their fourth child and second son, raised alongside his sisters, Cheryl and Sylvia, and his brothers, Warren and Michael, in the family home on Sherman Street in West Medford, Massachusetts. As a young boy, Gary was doted on, dearly loved, and known for the active, curious spirit that brought light to his family.

Gary attended the Medford Public Schools and graduated from Medford High School in 1976, lettering in football and track. He went on to study Chemical Engineering and earned degrees from Clark Atlanta and Georgia Tech. Gary was a founding member of the Lambda Delta chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi. In 1984, Gary and his wife, Lynn, were blessed with a son, Kyle.

In 2001, Gary and Badia Thomas were blessed with a daughter, Sophia.

Gary was gifted with the ability to “talk a sweater into a vest,” as his father would say. He knew everyone and made friends easily. Gary was outgoing, athletic, handsome, and multi-talented. He moved through life with ease and assurance. Gary had an entrepreneurial spirit and was proficient in problem-solving. He was like his father, in that he could do household repairs and fix anything.

Gary left Massachusetts in the ‘80s and lived in South Carolina, Georgia, and Missouri. He returned home to Massachusetts later in life and lived in Medford, Malden, and Stoughton.

His life encompassed both challenges and moments of sincerity, and he will be remembered as a man whose imperfections were real, yet whose laughter could be heard across the room. Gary was dearly loved and will be missed by many.

He leaves behind his son, Kyle (Jennifer) Kelly, and two grandsons, Archie and Otis; his daughter, Sophia Evans; his sisters, Cheryl Evans and Sylvia (John) Robinson; his brothers, Warren and Michael (Angela) Evans; his cousins, Paula (Neal) Anderson, Barry (Rhonda) Latham, Darren (Alicia) Evans, and Crystal Evans; his dear friend and former partner, Madeline Robbins; and many friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, September 14, 2026 at Shiloh Baptist Church in Medford, MA, followed by an interment service at Oak Grove Cemetery, and a repast at Bistro 5.

In honor of Gary’s life, the family invites memorial donations to the Drug Policy Alliance, in support of their meaningful ongoing work.
