Austin Randolph Martin of Needham, formerly of Watertown, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2026, after a fierce battle with cancer that did not slow him until his final moments.
He was the husband and steadfast partner of Lindsay (Ruhlmann) Martin and the immensely proud father of Isabelle and Graham Martin. He was the dear son of Leo and Joan (Donahue) Martin of Watertown; brother of Benjamin Martin and his wife, Brette, of Bethesda, Maryland, and Joseph Martin and Anne Weiss of Boston; son-in-law of Albert and Audrey Ruhlmann of River Edge, New Jersey; and brother-in-law of Heather Bianchi and her husband, Robert, of Haymarket, Virginia, and Allison Richardson and her husband, James, of Hingham, Massachusetts. He was a loving uncle to Grace, Owen, Avery, Caroline, Bo, and Zoey, and is also survived by the many cousins he chose not only as family, but as friends.
Austin lived according to a deeply held set of values. His faith grounded him. His family came first. He showed up for his friends, always saw the best in people, and made those around him feel welcomed and valued. His home was a place where there was always room for one more person at the table.
The Jesuit ideals that shaped Austin at Boston College High School and Georgetown University - faith, service, community, and being a man for others - remained central throughout his life. He later earned his MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management.
Austin believed deeply in community and in being present for the people he loved. He found enormous joy in watching Isabelle and Graham grow into themselves. He treasured Sunday dinners with his parents, chose his brothers as some of his closest friends, and maintained lifelong friendships with a loyalty and constancy that were unmistakably his.
Austin brought tremendous energy, discipline, and an intense work ethic to everything he did. He was deeply accomplished, but he measured his life less by achievement than by the strength of his relationships, the commitments he kept, and the people he loved.
He moved through life with unmistakable enthusiasm and an inquisitive nature, deeply interested in people, ideas, and the world around him. Austin made his mark through his generosity, loyalty, faith, humor, determination, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. He will be missed every day, but his influence will remain present - in his children, his family and friends, the communities he helped shape and the countless ways those who loved him will carry forward the values by which he lived.
Visiting hours will be held at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home 1305 Highland Ave. NEEDHAM on Tuesday, September 8th from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Ignatius of Loyola Church 28 Commonwealth Ave, Chestnut Hill on Wednesday, September 9th at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jimmy Fund in gratitude for the extraordinary care Austin received at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, which allowed him to live so fully throughout his illness.
