Obituary

Lawrence P. Sylvia, 72, of New Bedford died September 10, 2002 at home after a long illness.

He was the husband of Anna (Garcia) Sylvia and son of the late Antone G. Souza, Sr. and Mary Anna (Jacques) Souza and step-son of Dorothy Souza of New Bedford.

Mr. Sylvia was born in New Bedford and lived in New Bedford all of his life.

He was formerly employed by Edson Marine for 39 years until his retirement. He was also active in the carpentry field.

Mr. Sylvia was very active in DeRossi Music School and an avid train enthusiast and a coin and stamp collector.

He served in the US Navy during the Korean War and was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the China Service Medal, the United Nations Medal and the South Korean Presidential Unit Citation.

Survivors include his wife; 2 sons, Michael Sylvia and Joseph Sylvia, both of New Bedford; 2 daughters, Theresa Haydt, and her husband Alan, of East Providence and Ann Marie Arruda, and her husband William Arruda, Sr., of Worcester; 5 brothers, Joseph Sylvia and Antone "Tony" Souza, Jr, and his wife Elsie, all of New Bedford, Raymond Souza, and his wife Mary, of Dartmouth, Richard Souza of Rhode Island and Paul Cormier of New Bedford; 2 sisters, Dorothy Sylvia and Agnes Sylvia, both of Fairhaven; 5 grandchildren, Elizabeth Lolio, and her husband Michael, William Arruda, Jr., Kelci Sylvia, Kristen Sylvia and Tyler Sylvia, 1 great-grandson, Anthony Lolio; several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Helen Cournoyer.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Service at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, Friday, September 13th at 11 AM.

Visiting hours Thursday, September 12th from 5-8 PM.

Interment St. Mary's Cemetery.
