Lee Caldwell was born on August 6, 1936 in London, Ontario, Canada to Vernon and Emilie Gardner. An only child, Lee spent her early years in Canada before her mother brought her to the US. Though she had no siblings, she remained connected to her cousins, Bert McComb and Merne Witherden.
While attending UCLA, Lee met Roger Caldwell, her Prince Charming, who would become her husband on June 16, 1956, at the beautiful Wayfarer’s Chapel in Palos Verdes, CA. Roger remained the great love of Lee’s life, and after his passing in 2016, she would say she was ready to join him at any moment.
One of the things Lee was most proud of was her 46 years in Alcoholics Anonymous. AA was far more than an accomplishment to Lee; it was an important and beloved part of her life. She spoke often and openly about her gratitude for the program and what it had given her. Her journey began in the West Valley, where her sponsor, Grace, had a way of getting straight to the point. Those who heard Lee tell the story will remember her imitation of Grace calling her with a sneer, “Listen, sister!” It was a story Lee loved to tell and one that captured both the importance of that relationship and Lee’s ability to find humor in life.
And humor was very much a part of Lee. To be around her was often to laugh. She loved jokes, being silly, wearing hats and costumes, and finding ways to make the people around her smile. Lee didn’t take herself too seriously, and she brought a sense of fun wherever she went. She was truly a hoot to be around.
Lee also dearly loved her dog, Princess, who held a very special place in her heart. Lee is survived by her cousins, Bert (and Nancy) McComb and Merne Witherden, and leaves behind many dear friends who loved her and will miss her laughter, her stories, her humor, and the unmistakable spirit she brought into their lives.
For years, Lee ended each night with her own request to God: “Beam me up, Scotty!” She has finally gotten her wish, and we imagine her now reunited with Roger and her beloved Princess.
Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Service to be held on Saturday September 12, 2026 at 10am in the JOSEPH P. REARDON FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICE, 757 E. Main Street, Ventura.
