Dr. Darrell Morey, 91, of Tifton, died Sunday, September 24, 2006, at Tift Health Care. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Burial will be held at a later date in Tift Memorial Gardens.
Dr. Morey was born on December 6, 1914 in Manhattan, Kansas and was the son of Dorr Morey and Mary Allen Morey, both deceased. He was retired from the Georgia Coastal Experiment Station as an agronomist/plant breeder and had live in Tifton since July 1953. He received a B.S. Degree from Kansas State University; a Masters Degree from Texas Tech; and a Ph.D. from Iowa State University. He spent his life as a scientist/plant breeder. He also did some teaching at the University of Georgia and the University of Florida. Dr. Morey did research work in small grains at the Coastal Plains Experiment Station in Tifton from 1953 until he retired in 1985.
Dr. Morey is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joyce Allen Morey, of Tifton, whom he married on November 18, 1940; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Stan and Bootsie Morey of Yalaha, Florida and Roger Morey of Tifton; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Sheryl Morey of Auburn, Alabama, Janice Spencer of Jonesboro, Margery and Paul Benzie of Paris, Kentucky and Carolyn and Tim Orebaugh of Columbus, Ohio; one brother, Duane Morey of Manhattan, Kansas; eight grandchildren, Virginia Spencer of Douglasville, Keith Spencer and his wife, Cherie, of Douglasville, Kay Spencer of Jonesboro, Matthew Orebaugh of Columbus, Ohio, Christy Orebaugh of Columbus, Ohio, Shaina Benzie of Paris, Kentucky, Kevin Benzie of Santa Barbara, California and Marcie Stewart and her husband, Nathan, of Yalaha, Florida; and three great grandchildren, Nicholas Gooden of Douglasville, Alaina Gooden of Douglasville and Ethan Stewart of Yalaha, Florida.
The family requests no flowers, however, donations may be made in Dr. Morey’s memory to your favorite charity.
