Obituary



Marie J. (Powell) Hayes, age 90, formerly of Mansfield, Norton and Melrose, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 20, 2026 at the Life Care Center in Attleboro. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert E. Hayes, to whom she was wed for fifty years at the time of his death on January 10, 2023.

Born in Melrose, MA on October 16, 1935, she was a loving daughter of the late Leonard A. and Mary E. (Delaney) Powell.

Marie grew up in her hometown of Melrose. Along with her late husband, she was a 1953 graduate of Melrose High School and continued her studies, attending Boston University.

Prior to retiring, Mrs. Hayes worked as an Administrative Assistant for Travelers Insurance in Boston. She was a communicant of Saint Mary’s Church in Mansfield and especially loved spending time with her adoring family and enjoyed skiing.

She is survived by her devoted son, Glenn R. Hayes and his wife Michelle of Jericho, Vermont. She was the cherished grandmother of Nicholas Hayes and his partner Bill Gaynor and Dr. Jennifer Hayes and her husband Elliot Ariel. She was the treasured aunt of Cheryl Hayes and the late Brian F. Hayes. She was the much-loved sister-in-law of the late George F. Hayes and his late wife Shirley Hayes and the late Harold Thomson.

Her Funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 26th at 11:30 A.M. in Saint Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt Street (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at 1:45 P.M.

Visiting hours are omitted and due to the limitation of floral tributes allowed at the National Cemetery, donations in Marie’s memory may be made to Saint Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt Street, Mansfield, MA 02048.
