Obituary

Gordon M. Sylvia, 93, passed away on August 1, 2026 surrounded by family, quietly and peacefully -- much as he lived his life.

Gordon grew up living a bucolic life with his horses, his faithful dog and his five siblings on his parents’ farm in Acushnet. When the Korean War erupted, Gordon, at age 19, proudly and willingly served his country. Gordon was skilled and meticulous in many ways, including masonry, automotive maintenance, and building a home addition. His lifelong trade was truck driving for the Blue Stone Quarry in Acushnet which, through the brotherhood of the Teamsters Union, provided both a solid living sufficient to raise his family in comfort and a secure and lengthy retirement.

For many years, Gordon and his wife, Celeste, wintered in Florida, enjoying outings in the warm weather, visiting with relatives and friends, and opening their home to family seeking a reprieve from the frigid Northeast winters.

One of Gordon’s most enduring, and endearing, qualities, was his good-natured approach to whatever came his way. He never complained and did whatever was needed, cheerfully and with diligence. Gordon was always eager to partake in any excursion. He drove the breadth and width of the country with his family, happily exploring and adventuring. Beyond this, Gordon was an avid freshwater angler and spent many treasured days fishing with his son -- enjoying his last fishing trip at age 92.

Gordon is survived by the love of his life, his spouse of 64 years, Celeste. Gordon cherished every minute spent with his son Kevin and daughter-in-law Kathy, daughter Karen and son- in-law Jeff, his grandchildren Kristen and Graham, granddaughter-in-law Alyssa, and the latest additions to the family: great-grandchildren Quinn and Rylee.

Gordon was an extraordinary gentleman who lived an ordinary life, achieving a type of success that is uncommon but universally sought. In accordance with his wishes, his burial will be private. Gordon will be interred with Military Honors at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
