STANDISH- John Albert Heggeman passed away at his home in Standish on July 31st after a long illness. He was 79 years old.
John was born at Maine Medical Center in Portland on March 15th, 1947, to Robert and Priscilla Heggeman. He was the oldest of six children.
Growing up in Standish, John attended Bonny Eagle High School and graduated in 1965. After high school he attended Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute and then enlisted in the navy as a SeaBee. John was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
After his time in the service John returned to Standish and married Norma Blanchard in June of 1970. Together they raised three children in the house that John built. Throughout the 1980s John built beautiful homes for a living all across Southern Maine. In the 1990s he worked as a Master Electrician for Bob Walker Inc; a job he would enjoy until he retired.
Tragedy struck in 1992 when Norma passed away after a long battle with cancer. John became a single parent, guiding three children through their teenage years.
John found love again in 1994 when he met Shirley Shaw. They married on April 8th, 1995. The two were inseparable.
John Heggeman was an antique car enthusiast and had a great fondness for trains. He was a firefighter and spent time on the planning board in Standish. He enjoyed traveling and Sunday afternoon Nascar races. His faith and his family meant everything to him.
John is survived by his wife Shirley, his sons Andrew and Timothy, his daughter Amy, his stepson David Shaw, his sister June, his brothers Paul, Stephen and Bruce, his grandchildren Emily, John, Illyana, Aiden and Marrin as well as many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by Norma, his first child Gregory and his brother Royce.
Visitation will be held on Thursday Aug. 6th from 10 - 11AM, followed by an 11 AM service at the Cressey Road Christian Church, 81 Cressey Road, Gorham.
