Obituary

SANDRA (MAXFIELD) SHAW, a Hingham resident since 1962, died on Thursday, Sept. 21st at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston. She was 70. Mrs. Shaw was born in New Bedford and was raised and educated in Fairhaven where she graduated from high school in 1953. She graduated in 1957 from Connecticut College and in 1981 received her Certificate in Music Education from the Boston Conservatory of Music. For many years Mrs Shaw taught music, specifically stringed instruments in the Hingham Public School System and also taught many pupils privately in her Hingham home.

An accomplished violist and violinist, she played with the Hingham Civic Orchestra, the Hingham Symphony Orchestra, the Longy Chamber Orchestra in Cambridge and the Longwood Symphony Orchestra in Boston. She was also an active member of the Second Parish Unitarian Universalist Church since coming to Hingham 44 years ago. Mrs. Shaw was a devoted grandmother who enjoyed travel and her second family home in Waitsfield, VT.

Wife of Kimball Shaw of Hingham, she was the mother of Martha S. Nevill and her husband John of Falmouth, Peter K. Shaw of Mattapoisett, Douglas G. Shaw and his wife Erin of Fletcher, VT and her American Field Service daughter, Erminia M.M. Marquezi Correa of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Sister of Gordon T. Maxfield of Holliston, MA, Hollis P. Mitchell of Anchorage, AK and the late Carl B. Maxfield. Grandmother of Ryan H. Nevill, Hollis C. Nevill, Leah G. Nevill and Matthew K. Nevill, all of Falmouth, and Wesley T. Shaw of Fletcher, VT.

A Memorial Service will be conducted on Saturday, October 14th at 3 PM at the Second Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, 685 Main St. (Rt. 228), Hingham, MA 02043.

Visiting hours and flowers omitted by request. Rather than flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place West, 6th Floor, Brookline, MA 02445-7226 or to the Second Parish Church.

The interment is to be private.
