Obituary

MEREDITH --- Lawrence Clay Hoagland, 94, of Moultonborough, NH, peacefully passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2026, after a period of declining health.

Lawrence was born in Marion, Ohio, on November 15, 1931, to the late Karl C. Hoagland and Nona (Sparks) Hoagland. He grew up near Toledo, Ohio where he married his high school sweetheart.

He attended General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan (now Kettering University), for his undergraduate degree and then continued his studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, where he earned his Doctorate of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

Professionally he helped found Dynatech Corporation and Steam Engine Systems (that later became Scientific Energy Systems) working in research and development in thermodynamics, culminating in the development of the energy efficient rotary heat wheel for AirXchange, Inc.

During his retirement years he channeled his talents towards recreational pursuits with his family and friends. He designed and built a house on Lake Winnipesaukee after falling in love with the area. He enjoyed fishing and boating, building a steamboat and touring in his early antique cars including trips to Ireland and Europe. There were many memorable family trips including an Alaskan Cruise, sailing in the Caribbean and a New Zealand adventure. Throughout his life he made many happy and memorable experiences with his family who will cherish those memories forever.

Lawrence is survived by his wife, Carol (Carsten) Hoagland; daughters Kathryn (George) Nourse, of Southwick, MA, and Sandra Hoagland, of Durango, CO; son Douglas Hoagland, of Pawcatuck, CT; grandchildren Rebecca (Nourse) Beall, Willam Nourse, C. Bradley Nourse, Emily Richards, Sara (Richards) Cooper, and Nathan Watkins-Hoagland; and 9 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Sally (Hoagland) Hosack; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Lawrence was predeceased by his daughter Janet Hoagland Richards and his sister Joyce Hoagland Eby.

A private Celebration of Life will be held in the fall.
