Obituary

SPRINGFIELD - Elizabeth (Williams) O'Shea, 93, of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 27, 2026. surrounded by her loving family at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Elizabeth, daughter of the late Francis and Elizabeth (Martin) Williams, was born in Cahirdorgan, County Kerry, Ireland on July 23, 1933. In her childhood, she lived an idyllic life on a beautiful country farm, attending the local one room schoolhouse heated by peat. She immigrated to the United States in 1952. Soon after, she met her husband, James, a recently returned Korean War veteran and also Kerry born. Elizabeth spent her lifetime in service of others. While raising five children and helping raise ten grandchildren, she worked at Mercy Hospital, Eldercare Nursing Home, and cared for several seniors who treated her like family. Two of her favorites, were caring for young Ben and Chris Allen for eight years; a most enjoyable chapter of her life. She was a proud lifetime member of the John Boyle O'Reilly Club and one of its first female members in 1991. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and a longtime communicant of the former Our Lady of Hope Church, both in Springfield. She was very proud of her Irish heritage and will be fondly remembered for her "famous" Mutton pies and her Irish bread. She was an amazing mother and, grandmother, and leaves behind many wonderful friends who made her life full of happiness and love. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, James O'Shea who was Called Home on April 22, 2012; her son-in-law, Tom Grassetti; and her six siblings, Mary Ann Irvine, William Williams, John Joe Williams, Richard Williams, Annie Bridge Smyth, and Francis Williams. She leaves her five children, Elizabeth A. Barbeau and her husband, Jeff, of Wilbraham, John J. O'Shea and his wife, Eileen, of Southampton, Maureen T. O'Shea of Monson, James M. O'Shea and his wife, Jane, of Guilderland, NY, and Margaret "Peg" O'Shea Reidy and her husband, John Reidy, of Belchertown; her ten grandchildren, Shauna Barbeau, Elizabeth Vanderscoff and her husband, Paul, Meaghan Barbeau, Christopher O'Shea and his wife, Sara, Conor O'Shea, Eamonn O'Shea and his wife, Sheena, Dylan O'Shea and his partner, Stephanie, Hannah Twiss and her wife, Jackie, Michael Reidy and his fiancée, Madison, and Kevin Reidy and his partner, Emily; her seven great grandchildren, Patrick, Nora, Lara, Seamus, Aoife, Freya, and Autumn; and her many nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family members and friends in the United States and Ireland. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. Her burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 421 Tinkham Road, Springfield, MA 01129. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, August 1, 2026 from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. before the Mass. Her family requests that memorial donations be made in her memory to the John Boyle O'Reilly Club, 33 Progress Avenue, Springfield, MA 01104.
