Luz Mariela Gil Patiño, 79, of Campamento, Antioquia Colombia passed away peacefully July 25, 2026 at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA surrounded by her loving family. Luz Mariela was born January 9th, 1947 in Campamento, Colombia to Ana Perpetuo Patiño and Evelio Gil. From a young age, Luz Mariela discovered that her calling was a life of devotion and service to others. As the oldest of eight siblings, she helped raise her brothers and sisters, embracing responsibility, unconditional care, and selflessness. She carried these values with her as she was blessed to become a mother to Diana Maria Pelaez, instilling in her the same ideals she deeply cherished. Luz Mariela gave Diana a life rooted in teaching her lessons of faith and showing her the importance of putting family first; lessons that became the foundation of Diana’s own life. It was this importance that drove Luz Mariela to make the decision to leave her home in Colombia and begin a new chapter alongside her daughter, embracing the opportunity to be present in the lives of her grandchildren. For Luz Mariela, there was no greater joy than being surrounded by the people she loved most.
Those who had the pleasure of knowing Luz Mariela would describe her as an elegant and refined woman whose impeccable attention to detail was apparent in everything she did. From her perfectly styled hair, to her color coordinated closet; it was evident that she took pride in her organization and cleanliness. It was contagious to her family and friends who were inspired to follow the same habits.
Luz Mariela also had a curiosity for discovering new places. She embraced every opportunity to travel, experience new cultures, and create lasting memories with her loved ones. Her adventurous spirit reflected her openness to enjoy life and willingness to try new things. She had a remarkable gift for craftsmanship, and exercised that gift every chance she got. She spent her time working on arts and crafts, painting, knitting, or other artistic projects. She found happiness not only in expressing her imagination and creativity through activities, but in sharing her creations with others freely.
Luz Mariela will be remembered for knowing exactly what to say at the moment it was needed most. Her words brought comfort, guidance, and hope to whoever was listening. Her loved ones knew they never needed to ask twice for help; she would be there without hesitation. Whether it was bringing medicine for someone who was ill, preparing a home cooked meal, or simply offering her presence and time; Luz Mariela gave herself wholeheartedly to those closest to her. She was also admired for being an exceptional listener, always making others feel heard and valued. She was the first person to call if you needed words of encouragement, honest advice, or even a difficult truth.
For the last twenty two years, Luz Mariela found her greatest happiness in her family. Her face would light up whenever she spoke about her grandchildren, and nothing would bring joy to her face more than caring for them, spending time with them, and being present for the milestones that shaped their lives. Being there for her daughter and grandchildren was one of the most meaningful parts of her life. Her family was her greatest blessing, and the love she gave them became her lasting legacy.
She is survived by her daughter Diana Medina, formerly of Medellín, Colombia and currently of Cranston RI, her sisters Luz Yamile Gil and Emma Lilia Gil, and her brothers Jorge Hernan Gil and Fernando Alberto Gil of Campamento, Antioquia, Colombia. As well as by her loving grandchildren Grace Medina, Tomas Medina, and Nicholas Medina of Cranston, RI. She is also survived by many other loving family members, and friends who were her chosen family.
Luz Mariela’s family invites all who knew and loved her to join them in celebrating her beautiful life on Saturday August 1, 2026 at the Basilica and Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help located at 1545 Tremont St, Boston, MA 02120. A viewing will be held at 9:00 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. Together, they will honor her unwavering faith, her generous spirit, and the unconditional love she shared so graciously with everyone around her.
