Rosemarie “Romi” Burroughs, née Echter, passed away peacefully July 27, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, adventure, and artistry. Born on January 16, 1941, in München, Germany, Romi carried a deep love for Bavaria in her heart throughout her life. Having grown up in Germany during the shadow of World War II, Romi’s early life shaped her strong convictions. She became a passionate, lifelong advocate against fascism and for justice.
After living in various regions across the United States, Romi eventually settled in Oxnard, California, alongside her cherished husband, Lawrence Burroughs. Together, they embraced a life full of adventure—frequently camping, sailing, and traveling the world.
Romi was a gifted artisan who poured her heart into her crafts. She created countless beautiful, handmade masterpieces through bobbin lace, knitting, and crocheting, leaving behind tangible pieces of her warmth, creativity, and care for those she loved. She especially loved making socks for her family members, each pair crafted with care and treasured by those who received them.
Her Catholic faith was an important and sustaining part of her life, and through her church community she formed many meaningful friendships that brought her comfort, joy, and connection.
Above all, Romi will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, her generous love, and the joyful memories she gifted to everyone who knew her.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Larry; her children, Steve Tanio (Tani), Melanie Freeman (Ray), Nadine Tanio Ebesu (Glen), and Brian Tanio; her siblings, Annemie Gruber (Heinz u. Familie), Elisabeth Gutzeit (Jürgen u. Familie), and Kurt Echter (Edith); her grandchildren, Aubrey Davis (Brad), Evan Madsen, Emily Madsen, Isaac Ebesu, Katy Tanio, Heck Tanio, Joey Meyer, Justine Meyer, and Jaymee Meyer; and her great-grandchildren, Gabriel Davis and Fiona Davis.
Romi’s family and friends will carry her memory forward with love and gratitude.
In lieu of flowers, Romi’s charity of choice is Donna Lexa Art Centers, an inclusive art studio for people with disabilities and artists of all abilities. This organization was close to her heart because her grandson with autism is a prolific artist and attends their studios. Donations may be made at www.donnalexa.org.
Family and friends are invited to Vigil Prayers to be held on Thursday July 30, 2026 at 4pm in the chapel of the JOSEPH P. REARDON FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICE, 757 E. Main Street, Ventura.
