Obituary

Walter J. Hughes Jr., 79, of Dedham, MA died unexpectedly on July 25, 2026. He was the beloved husband of Patricia Hughes for nearly 58 years. He was the devoted father to Matthew Hughes of Quincy, Julie Hughes (fiance Joseph Oliver) of Plainville, Michael Hughes (wife Monica) of Swampscott and Brendan Hughes (wife Molly) of Newburyport. He was the proud grandfather to Ben, Grace, Ryan, Graham, Avelyn, Lucas, Viola and Lily and loving uncle to several nieces and nephews. In addition he was predeceased by his sister, Denise Piscotta and brothers Bryan and Richard Hughes.

Wally graduated from Boston State with his bachelor’s degree in education in 1968.  He then received his master’s in 1972.  He started teaching English at Norwood High School right after college and became a guidance counselor the following year, which is where he found his true calling.  He spent the next 40 years helping students, parents and friends navigate their high school years and find their future paths.  He retired as the head of the Norwood High School guidance department.  He was an active member of the Massachusetts Teachers’ Association and was President of the Norwood Teachers’ Union for many years. He loved people and leaves a wonderful legacy behind through those he helped.

He could often be found reading a book, golfing at Wampatuck Country Club, or lounging by his pool.  However, his favorite pastimes were spending time with family, going to his grandchildren’s events, and loyally listening to his Red Sox on the radio.
