PORTER- Lawrence Joseph Dupuis II, age 65, passed away on July 23, 2026, at Bridgton Hospital.
My baby brother was born September 26, 1960. His LORD called him home, July 23, 2026. He died at home in his sleep from a heart attack with his loving wife, Teresa, beside him. Though he will not be physically present for his 66th birthday, his loving family is holding a private memorial at our home to celebrate happy memories of a wonderful man.
Formally called Larry, his closest friends and family called him Sonny. It was a name bestowed upon him by his grandfather, Ga-Ga. He and Ga-Ga had a special bond. Not because he was loved more than the other grandchildren, but because he was privileged to have lived with his grandparents. The two enjoyed many adventures together. One day they went to the bank together, where Sonny promptly closed the bank's vault door with a worker inside. It took awhile with frantic phone calls and a skilled craftsman to reopen the door. Needless to say, the manager requested this young child to be kept home.
My brother always loved animals. He was raised with German Shepherd dogs. They remained a passion until his death. As well as dogs, he enjoyed chasing squirrels, birds and animals that didn't move. One summer afternoon as a youngster, he wore a large smile while he carried a grand prize for his grandfather: a large dead rat! After a loud shriek from Ga-Ga, Sonny was rushed into the house to be washed from top to bottom. Sonny never lost that smile, though.
Larry went to South Portland schools. Elementary was Lincoln, SP Memorial Middle, and SP High School. Directly after graduation, he attended SMVTI and graduated with an associate degree in Automotive Technology. His first major job was with the Sears automotive department, where he faithfully and ethically fulfilled his responsibilities until he took early retirement after 20 years. While working for Sears he volunteered as a part-time dog trainer. After retirement he became a trainer at that facility for a few years. His final career was as a Personal Care Assistant until his final retirement, when his health became an issue.
He and his mother, Winona, were very close. She worked at Fairchild and National Semiconductor for 32 years. Part of her uniform was what we called the bunny suit. It consisted of white coveralls, a white hood and white booties. By adding ears and a tail, Sonny used this uniform for a Halloween costume during teen parties. It attracted the girls.
Larry was a joker with a hardy laugh and a beautiful smile, which he didn't show often enough. We were often at odds by his pranks. When he was 8, I was helping our Nana finish up baking. He kept running up to the table knocking things over and making a mess. I lost my patience and chased him. He ran so fast he couldn't stop and hit the screen door, dragging it off its hinges. Our mom was not very happy, but he learned a valuable lesson. Don't mess with big sis.
He was very close to our Nana. As her eyesight became worse through age, he would help find things she had misplaced around the house. Unfortunately, he never ceased to be a joker, and she became his private audience. You know I bet he was the one who hid those items! When she lost her patience, she would throw his calculator at him; missed him but broke the instrument every time. Mom became extremely frustrated by having to buy new calculators.
Larry leaves behind his wife, Teresa in Porter, a sister, Florence and her husband, Scot, in Buxton; Seven nieces are nephews who he was proud to introduce to his doctors, 8 grand nieces and grand nephews, four cousin's, Rick, Laura, Skip, and Brian and our favorite Aunt Prinnie who at 93 still lives on her own in New York, and multiple friends from churches he attended and Christian organizations he had belonged to.
I could go on, but I bet you are hoping I don't. :) I now will only hear Larry's laughter in my heart and see his face in my dreams but I have peace, because he is resting in his heavenly Father's arms. The next time I see my brother, I will have multiple cans of whip cream. And that, my friends is for another story.
